Feuding with John Cena Is a Losing Proposition for Seth Rollins

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 10 Dec 2014

Seth Rollins is heading for a major showdown with John Cena at WWE's TLC event on Sunday, December 14. The former Shield founder has had heat with the company's top guy for several months, and that heat has led to their TLC confrontation, which will be a tables match. While many of Rollins' fans are likely excited to see how their favorite will do on December 14, the fact is that it may all be for nothing. That's because regardless of whether or not he wins the match, facing Cena could very well be a losing proposition for Rollins. It's a notion that many surely do not want to hear. After all, Rollins has come a long way since his days in The Shield. He went from being the architect of WWE's most dominant faction of all time to being considered a real player in Vince McMahon's company.Of course, when he was running high with The Hounds of Destruction, no one really seemed to know where he would eventually land. The only certainty was that all three men definitely had a bright future ahead.Rollins along with Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns were the three hottest stars in WWE. Everything they touched turned to gold, and every time they were in the ring, they were magic together. Their intensity, combined with their individual ability to inhabit the characters and the gimmick itself, led to total legitimacy for fans. When the crowd saw The Shield, it was seeing the real deal. Each man had to succeed past the point of their run togetherit was almost like a sure bet. There was no way that Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose would fall or fade into obscurity after The Shield ended. They had done too much, made too much of an impact, to be considered anything less than three guys bound for stardom. The faction was a vehicle designed to get them over and establish them for the future. It was definitely a success. So when June 2 came around and The Shield was at the absolute height of their popularity, it was clear that big things were on the horizon. That future was sparked when Rollins picked up a steel chair and took his teammates out. That betrayal directly led to his alliance with Triple H. Since that time, Rollins has been featured with some real main event company.Randy Orton and Kane were by Rollins' side, and with Hunter at the head, The Authority ruled WWE with an iron fist. Rollins was being viewed as a singles star, a man on the rise, and the sky would be the limit for him.Actually, facing Cena should be the catalyst for Rollins' ascension to the main event level in WWE. At least, that's what many fans surely believe. But the problem is Cena is not going anywhere any time soon. He is the top dog in WWE, the man with all the stroke, and to defeat him is to be among the elite in the company. For that to happen, the man with his arm raised must already be on that level or heading in a clear direction to the top. However, this may not describe Rollins. He may indeed be Mr. Money in the Bank, but he is no closer to winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship than he was when he first pulled down the briefcase. The fact that Cena will lose his title shot if Rollins goes over does provide some intrigue, but it may not make that much of a difference for him. Many fans can likely imagine Cena being the champion at some point. Again, he is the top guy and that alone is practically a guarantee he will wear the gold like he always has.Fans can perhaps envision Reigns as the next guy to be WWE world heavyweight champion.Reigns recently won the Slammy for Superstar of the Year, and that could be a sign of bigger things to come for him on the main event scene. But the chances of Rollins actually cashing in and beating Brock Lesnar for the championship may not be as realistic. He needs to beat Cena in order to make a statement, to show fans that he belongs in the rare company of men to hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. For a younger star like Rollins, who is still working on establishing himself, to suddenly ascend and pin Lesnar is perhaps too much for fans to actually buy into. For him to win this feud with Cena and then move past him to begin with is quite possibly too unbelievable. There is just no real indication that Cena is willing to put Rollins over at TLC.The best that fans and Rollins himself can hope for is that he will look good in this rivalry. He must make a strong impression at TLC and do even more after that, if indeed this feud continues. Rollins must appear to be a legitimate threat to Cena's spot in the company, and if he cannot do that, then this program will not have really benefited him.Working Cena is good for Rollins in terms of getting experiencethere is no doubt about that. Getting in the ring with WWE's top star and holding his own is no small feat, and for fans to see Rollins in that capacity is a good thing for the former Shield architect. But he will likely not beat Cena in this feud. That means he will be just another opponent on Cena's way back to the gold and tying Ric Flair's record for being the 16-time champion. Or Rollins will simply segue from Cena to Reigns, who will then beat Lesnar for the championship at WrestleMania 31 next year.Either way, Rollins is the odd man out. If that happens, then this rivalry with Cena will have ultimately been for nothing.
