Feed Your Skin

Published by Guardian on Sat, 12 Nov 2011

YOU are what you eat, so goes the popular beauty mantra, which has been proved by medical experts that diet, indeed, affects one's health and skin radiance. New research has also proved that following a few food rules can give you a clear, lit-from-within complexion.Apart from following a good skincare regimen and going for regular spa treatment, your skin also reflects what you eat. So if your food is rich in nutrients, your skin will look radiant and have a natural luminosity.A simple food switch will benefit one's skin. Instead of consuming refined white carbohydrate such as, white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and sweets, that are the basis of our modern diet, go for moderate amounts of complex ones like whole-grain bread, brown rice, and whole-wheat pasta. Refined simple carbohydrates send our insulin levels soaring, and researchers speculate that this sets off a series of reactions that leads to breakouts. Complex carbohydrates on the other hand are digested more slowly and don't lead to that skin-sabotaging insulin spike.A diet that is high in fresh fruit, vegetables, salad stuffs, wholegrain cereals, some protein and fatty acids and plenty of fibre-rich foods will benefit your skin as well as your general health.High-fibre foods (grains, vegetables and fruit) together with plenty of water-preferably mineral water because it contains no chemicals- will aid the kidneys to flush out toxins and help to eliminate waste products speedily from the body. If food lingers too long in the systems the wastes start to be absorbed back into the bloodstream.Fish, poultry and vegetable protein are good for building healthy cells, while cereals, fruit, vegetables and low-fat dairy foods will provide essential vitamins and minerals.Vitamin A is particularly good for combating dry skin. Good sources are carrots, spinach, watercress, parsley, peppers, apricots, eggs, skimmed milk and fish oils. Vitamin E found in green vegetables, wheat germ, eggs and sunflower oil is good for dry skin, too.The B-complex vitamins are also vital for combating skin problems and ensuring good circulation. They are found in whole grains, liver, brewer's yeast, beans and pulses and wholewheat bread.Vitamin C is essential for strong elastic skin structure and can be found in citrus fruits, berry fruits, green vegetables tomatoes and bean sprouts.
