Published by Punch on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Chief Olusegun Olusola, has advised the Federal Government against removing fuel subsidy without weighing the socio-economic problems facing the citizens.Olusola stated this shortly after the presentation of Sir Peter Ibekwe: The Visionary Bridge Builder, written by a journalist, Eugenia Irobiegbulam, in Lagos. He said, "From the rhythm, I have been through, a large number of Nigerians feel they would like the Federal Government to have a second thought on the planned removal of fuel subsidy."And I will appeal to the government if it is an idea that is home-made, that is not being imposed on us by any outsider, I would like the government to do a rethink and not to remove the subsidy with immediate effect."He praised Ibekwe, saying the biography was an eloquent testimony of his service to mankind and to accountancy profession. Also, a former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, while speaking on, Visionary leadership: A catalyst for nation building, described Ibekwe as a visionary leader of note.Represented by Managing Director, Rayne Oil and Gas, Mrs. Christy Rayne-Okoye, the former minister said no country could achieve lofty objective without visionary leader. She said, "I wish to say without fear of contradiction that Nigeria as a country needs visionary leader at this critical point of its history."Surely, there is a lot of work to be done. These include fixing collapsed infrastructure, especially the power sector; reviving the education sector; tackling corruption, employment generation, growing the economy and improving on the security situation in the country."
