Anambra set for power Mike memorial championship

THE Anambra state chapter of the Nigerian (PRO) Wrestling Federation, has unveiled plans to host the maiden edition of Power Mike Memorial Championship in the commercial city of Onitsha .Speaking during the official inauguration of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Championship by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Lady Chinwe Anowai, the Anambra state chairman of the Federation, Emeka Ofolloma, said that the ChampioNship was conceived to relive and honour the late wrestling icon for his numerous contributions to the development of wrestling and sports in general which brought fame to the country.The bulky wrestler and current heavy weight champion, argued that the late Power Mike who was famous for his enormous strength was the pioneer of professional wrestling in Nigeria, adding that the competition will feature who is who in wrestling within and across the shores of Africa.'We are working round the clock in collaboration with the state government to ensure that we have a hitch free championship that will surely spur the youths to channel their strength into meaningful activities like sports. It will also encourage other sportsmen to continue doing their best for their country, seeing that our past sports heroes are celebrated and their visions kept alive', Ofolloma intoned.Commissioner for Youths and Sports, commended the organisers for their willingness to immortalize the late sports icon, who she said made the state proud during his days, 'the state government is happy with the efforts of the Wrestling Federation and will continue to support all genuine plans to promote sports in the state.She disclosed that Anambra state was once the face of sports in the nation, virtually dominating in all sporting activities, saying that the state will soon regain her pride of place in sports in the country in no distant time, 'if we consolidate on the achievements we have recorded in the last three years and maintain the current pace the state will soon bounce back to prominence in sports'.
