Muslim faithful laud Oyo govt for ensuring peace during sallah

Published by Tribune on Tue, 15 Nov 2011

THE peace and tranquility being enjoyed in the city of Ibadan, as well as other cities in Oyo State, during the just concluded Eid-el-Kabir festival has been lauded by some Muslim faithful and other residents of the ancient city.Community News, who went to town to sample the opinions of residents of Ibadan city about this year Eid-el-Kabir festival, gathered that the absence of violence or other criminal disturbance in different parts of the city was highly commended. Those who spoke with Community News over the issue said the state Police Command should be commended for ensuring peace and crime-free festival, adding that the state police command ensured that its officers and men were stationed at strategic places during the festival.A resident of Gate area, Ibadan, Semiu Adebayo, told Community News that everything, especially prayers and worship, went smoothly at the Gate Praying Ground unlike past years when there would be disturbances from political thugs of different parties at different praying grounds within the ancient city.Other muslim faithful who spoke with Community News about this year Eid-el-Kabir festival, also praised the state government for ensuring and guaranteed peace at major praying grounds within the city of Ibadan.A muslim leader at Aperin area of Ibadan, Alhaji Surajudeen Adeleke, said, 'we should thank the Almighty Allah for giving us the grace to witness this year's Eid-el-Kabir. As we are doing that, we should also give kudos to the state government for embarking of programmes and policies that have guaranteed peace and progress in the state.'If it were before, you would have heard of various intimidations, embarrassment and harassment of people at some praying grounds by political office holders and their thugs. Some politicians would have even caused crisis or pandemonium at praying grounds trying to prove political superiority. But we thank God that there was no such report in any mosque or praying ground this year,'he stated. An Ansar-U-deen Society cleric, Alfa Tajudeen Olaide, also gave kudos to the state government and the state police command for ensuring that peace pervaded the city during this year Ileya (Eid-el-Kabir) festival.According to him, 'the fact that the state government banned the activities of the members of the state National Union of Roads Transport Workers (NURTW) also went a long way at ensuring peace during this festival.'The ban on the union also helped Muslim faithful to have enough confidence and peace to go to praying grounds to worship and thank their creator for sparing their lives to witness this year's festival.
