Charged to maintain closer ties with other ethnic groups

DELTA State Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama (SAN), has urged the people of the Urhobo nation to strengthen their political ties with other ethnic groups in their quest for greater relevance in the polity.Utuama who spoke during the inauguration of a new Urhobo umbrella political pressure group, Urhobo Political Congress (UPC), expressed his desire to leave a legacy of unity and oneness for the Urhobo nation.Advising the people to strengthen the Urhobo support for the administration of the State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, he said; 'no matter how dominant we might be, we cannot do it alone,' adding that 'we cannot on our own decide to make ourselves a minority ethnic group in the state.'Utuama said that the establishment of the UPC was the beginning of the strengthening of the principle of equal political opportunities of all Urhobos, pointing out that the objective of the group was to advance the interest of the Urhobo nation.National Chairman of the group, Chief Ighoyota Amori, in his remarks, urged the people to bury their personal political interest for the betterment of the Urhobo nation.According to him, the inauguration of the group marked the end of the Urbobo Political Forum (UPF), and Urhobo Consultative Forum (UCF), adding that the UPC was not an anti-government organisation and will not function as such.Earlier in his address, Chairman of the ceremony, General Dominic Oneya (rtd), opined that the establishment of the UPC would lead to the laying of a solid foundation for the emancipation of the Urhobo nation.He called on the Urhobo political class to, at all times, speak with one voice as 'true sons and daughters of the Urhobo nation, saying 'we are now on the path of political greatness in the state and country at large.
