Apapa residents decry indiscriminate parking of petrol tankers

Published by Tribune on Fri, 18 Nov 2011

As a way of finding a lasting solution to traffic snarl in Apapa Local Government Area of Lagos State, the residents of Apapa and its environs have called on the state government to address the problems of petrol tankers parking in residential areas.Community News gathered from some of the residents that the indiscriminate parking of the tankers in the areas by drivers was giving them serious concern because of the danger it posed to life and property.'Our case is very terrible and we are calling on the state government to come to our aids before it gets out of hands. We live in fear everyday. The possibility of a fire outbreak is very high because of presence of the tankers and inflammable nature of the goods they carry. We are calling on the state government to relocate the tankers to free this community from the dangers their presence pose to the community.'Apart from dangers their presence poses to the community, some of the landlords also lamented that the ways and manners drivers usually park their tankers always pose serious traffic problem to other road users, especially when coming home in the evening.'To make the matter worse, a tanker may breakdown and it may take days to repair it and the residents will be at the mercy of the driver. It is giving us serious concern and we want government agencies like Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and Federal Road Safety Commission to come to our aids by taking charge of traffic control in the area,' a resident said.
