Reasons that people still play Fruit Slot Machines in 2022

Published by Vanguard on Thu, 10 Feb 2022

There are many reasons as to why people still play fruit machines in 2022. Despite the great shift online in the mid-1990s and the subsequent 25 years of rapid evolution, there’s still a place for the humble fruity in 2022.

When you consider the world in which we live, fruit machines do invoke nostalgia within us. We can speak to anyone on the planet at any time, wherever we are, we can get to the other side of the world in a few hours, and we’re even conquering space. But people still play fruit slot machines - also try Cashzuma and the Tomb of Wonga.

Why Well, they’re extremely entertaining for one thing! Maybe it’s their simplicity and lack of complexity that people crave once in a while. If you look at the iGaming industry, some of the titles that get released are really sophisticated and increasingly complex. Sometimes, there’s nothing wrong with something simple that everyone loves.

Familiarity doesn’t breed contempt

There’s an old saying that familiarity breeds contempt. However, the fruit machine disproves this. In all honesty, they haven’t changed that much since the first ever fruit machine came out in 1887 and they’re still popular. After all, they’re still one of the most popular draws in casinos.

They’re so easy to use that anyone (over 18 years of age) can have a go. What’s more, you don’t need to bankrupt yourself to play. With just a few quid in your pocket, you’re on your way.

Over 130 years old and still going strong

Ever since the Liberty Bell fruit machine was invented in the last few decades of the 19th century, their colourful cousins and descendants have been found in public houses and casinos entertaining people. What’s more, the people that played on them at the turn of the 20th century would recognise them too. They haven’t really changed that much – a mark of some success.

It doesn’t look as though they’re going anywhere either. The UKGC (UK Gambling Commission) revealed that the amount of money spent by British people using online casinos between October 2018 and September 2019 was £5.6 billion.
Clearly, that money spent isn’t all on fruit machines, but they’re a mainstay on online casino websites and have integrated seamlessly into the digital age.

The titles speak for themselves

Speaking plainly, fruit machines remain popular today, and are still played on online casinos because of the very thing that was supposed to see them disappear. Technological advances.

Instead of being cast aside and forgotten as a relic, they’ve been hoovered up, given a makeover, polished a little bit, and put back on the shelf.

Despite the huge leaps forward in gaming sophistication, astute slots developers have held onto what kept fruit machines popular for over a century: their simplicity.

Check out the great fruit machine titles which remain popular to this day, and the proof really is in the pudding – people play fruit slot machines because they’re fun, exciting, simple, and let’s be honest, a little bit addictive too!
