Published by The Nation on Sun, 31 Jan 2021

By Vincent Ikuomola, AbujaThe South African police failed to protect non-nationals when they were recently attacked by the locals in Durban, it was learnt.According to the President, Nigerian Citizens Association (NICASA), Prince Benjamin Okoli, foreign-owned shops were targeted and fire bombed by the locals suspected to be MK veterans. The response of the police has made many among the non-nationals to allege that the attacks were clearly an act of xenophobia against foreigners, he said.Narrating the ugly event that took place in the early hours of Monday 25th 2021, Okoli said information about the attack was circulated on the social media on Sunday, which was early enough for the police to take precautionary measures and nip it in the bud before it occurred. However, he said the police failed to protect non-nationals and their businesses.
