Edo public schools remain shut

By Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau ChiefPublic primary schools in Edo State are still shut despite a restraining order over an indefinite strike by teachers across the 18 local government areas of the state.The Nation correspondent, who monitored the strike on Tuesday in Benin and its environs, observed teachers and pupils deserted the public primary schools.Officials of the Public Works Volunteer (PUWOV) were however deployed in the public primary schools by Godwin Obasekis administration to prevent the breakdown of law and order.The strike since January 18, 2021, was to prevail on Obasekis administration to implement the primary school teachers ten-point agenda, bordering on prompt payment of their salaries, allowances and other welfare matters.READ ALSO:Sports remain a priority in Edo State, says ShaibuThe Edo Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has maintained it had not seen the restraining order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Benin presided over by Justice Abiola Adewemimo.The court, on Monday, in a suit filed by the Edo state government and the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) with reference number: NICN/BEN/04/2021, restrained Edo NUT from proceeding on any strike in Edo primary schools.The Assistant Secretary-General of Edo NUT, Mike Itua, stated that as at the close of work on Tuesday, no court paper had been served to the union.
