This was a big task for UrbanStems since our Colorado-based tester reports that most flower services don't deliver to her small town, and if they do, the flowers usually arrive late or in bad shape from the long journey down unpaved roads.

Despite the challenge we posed, UrbanStems delivered some of the freshest, most attractive bouquets to all our testers — on time and in excellent condition. All the bouquets arrived with some closed buds, however, this is fairly normal and they eventually opened up after a couple of days. The flowers lasted a little over a week — average for fresh-cut flowers, though a few days shorter than some of the other services we tested.

We also took the opportunity to order from UrbanStems' collection of live plants and dried bouquets. The Claude arrived healthy and full; the Aspen dried bouquet was gorgeous, albeit a bit stiff compared to bouquets from our favorite dried flower brand.

In addition to a fantastic product selection spanning everything from fresh bouquets, dried flowers, gifts, plants, and subscriptions, UrbanStems' website was also very easy to navigate. Filters allow you to sort by product type, occasion, price, color, and collection. When you navigate to the product page, it tells you exactly what flowers are in the bouquet (a must if you have pets at home for whom plants could be toxic) and the recommended occasion. If you live in New York City or Washington, D.C., you can receive same-day delivery on some bouquets. Otherwise, many products are available for next-day delivery to the lower 48 states, though you'll have more options if you choose a delivery date at least a few days out.

Read our full review of UrbanStems.

The best flower delivery service for farm-fresh flowers

Farmgirl Flowers offers unique and playful arrangements that change with what's in season and with many blooms sourced from California farmers.

Price range: $42 to $250

Delivery area: Lower 48 states

Same-day delivery: No

Next-day delivery: Possible, but not guaranteed

Shipping: $25

Pros: Whimsical, in-season blooms; each bouquet is unique; moderately priced; offers some rare flowers; some florals are grown in the US

Cons: Surprise bouquets not ideal if you have specific flowers you want to include or avoid; some customers report wilting or short-lived blooms

If you're looking for an arrangement that looks like it was recently plucked from the garden, Farmgirl Flowers offers inventive and playful bouquets based on what's in season. Farmgirl's flagship offerings are the Mini, Midi, and Maxi bouquets, available either wrapped in burlap or "mittened" in a vase. The idea behind these arrangements is that you don't get to choose what you receive; instead, Farmgirl puts together a bouquet based on what's available and in season. The company's website and social media can give you an idea of what to expect, but every bouquet arrives slightly different, giving it a special, unique feel.

I received a Midi and a Maxi, and had another Midi sent to a tester in California. It was interesting to see the slight differences in shape and types of flowers used between our two bouquets, but we were both very impressed with the results. I love that the arrangements had a whimsical, wild shape to them, and they were gorgeous from every angle I looked at them. The Midi and Maxi both looked to be about the same size when I first received them; the Maxi arrived with more closed buds, but after a few hours in water, the blooms opened up to create a fuller, extravagant bouquet.

Farmgirl's model of surprise bouquets sourced from in-season blooms means that you can get a really impressive and sizable arrangement for a moderate price. It also takes the guesswork out of choosing a bouquet. However, if you want your bouquet to include (or avoid) certain flowers, Farmgirl also offers a few dozen specialty bouquets, most consisting of single flower types, including some rare blooms like flower breeder David Austin's Juliet and Patience roses. Several of these offerings are California grown, like the 1000ish Yellow Daisies and Market Bouquet: Tulips. For more DIY types, Farmgirl also offers Market Boxes, which give you 25 stems of seasonal flowers and greens to style yourself.

My bouquets lasted about 10 days, on par with our top pick. However, when I posted a photo of the bouquet on my personal social media account, a couple of people reached out to tell me their orders from Farmgirl either arrived wilted or only lasted a few days. Another said they felt misled by previous claims on the site that all of Farmgirl's flowers were US-grown (the retailer has since changed the text to specify which bouquets are sourced from California). While our experience with Farmgirl was very positive, we'll be keeping an eye on feedback from other customers over the next several months.

The best flower delivery service for custom arrangements

Floracracy's custom arrangements are a unique way to mark life's meaningful moments, and make gifting flowers feel incredibly personal and special.

Price range: $115 to $350

Delivery area: Lower 48 states

Same-day delivery: No

Next-day delivery: Yes

Shipping: Included

Pros: Completely customizable arrangements, online tool helps you choose the right arrangement, beautiful presentation and packaging, thoughtful extras like a petal pressing book and mini shears, letter writing service

Cons: Online tool can be a bit tricky to navigate, lots of packaging (though most is compostable or recyclable), few budget options

While it's nice to brighten someone's day with a bouquet, there are occasions that are worth marking with a truly stunning arrangement. Floracracy, which just launched in October 2020, caters to life's most meaningful moments by crafting custom floral arrangements that feel unique, personal, and extra special.

You start by customizing your arrangement using Floracracy's design tool to select the occasion, your relationship to the recipient, the mood you most want to convey, and the style of flowers you're looking for (whimsical, garden, Old World, etc). The tool recommends a certain shape that fits your answers, and you can customize the color palette and types of flowers that go into the arrangement. Each flower is paired with a meaning from the company's thorough research of historical flower symbolism, so you can better craft an arrangement that sets the mood you wish to convey. You're also given the option to write a letter yourself or have the company write one for you based on information you provide.

Having used the tool to customize my own piece, I had an idea of what to expect when my arrangement arrived on time a few days after ordering (next-day delivery is also available), but unboxing still felt special and exciting. Inside the shipping box, I was greeted by a gift box festooned with ribbon and adorned with my personalized letter and a small pair of gold-accented mini shears. Lifting the box lid uncovered the most lush, gorgeous floral arrangement I had ever seen: a whimsical array of garden roses in varying warm tones, each vibrant and perky and adorned by wild-looking ferns and foliage. Every arrangement also comes with a coordinating vase, a handbound book for pressing petals, and an illustrated card with each of the flowers and their meaning. The total package felt like a stunning and special gift.

The included materials on flower care were the most robust I've seen from any service, but the instructions also include information on how to dry and preserve the flowers or petals. I love that Floracracy acknowledges that fresh flowers are a fleeting gift, and still offers suggestions to enjoy your arrangement through all the stages of its life. The care instructions also noted that if you donate your empty vase to a women's shelter and let Floracracy know, the company will send them flowers, which I thought was a lovely touch.

I was incredibly impressed by the lifespan of the fresh flowers. Almost three weeks after receiving it, the arrangement still had many fresh blooms and foliage among the drying flowers, and it still looked artful and healthy enough to display. A colleague who ordered and received a smaller Floracracy arrangement reports her blooms have lasted just as long.

While very fairly priced for what you're receiving, one downside is that Floracracy doesn't offer many options at more affordable price points. Expect to spend at least $115 on this service, with more impressive options costing up to $300. It's also not the ideal choice if you're just looking to quickly pick out a bouquet and be done with the process — the service requires at least a little of your time and thought to get the most out of it, and the tool can be a bit tricky to navigate if you don't have your mind made up about what you want (the company is working on a "design it for me" option). That said, the result is one of the most personalized and special bouquets your loved one will likely ever have been gifted. For me, receiving and displaying the Floracracy bouquet was one of the highlights of my winter, and I already have plans to use this service for upcoming holidays and celebrations.

The best flower delivery service for same-day delivery

FTD offers hundreds of bouquets, gifts, and plants for delivery in all 50 states and 150 counties, with many options for same-day arrival.

Price range: $36 to $225

Delivery area: All 50 states, 150 countries

Same-day delivery: Yes

Next-day delivery: Yes

Shipping: Starts at $17.99 and varies based on delivery date and order total

Pros: Orders filled by local florists; a large selection of bouquets, plants, and gifts

Cons: Experience can vary based on which florist fills your order, designs are more traditional and less modern

Sometimes you really just need to send some flowers fast — moments of sympathy or apology, last-minute gifts, or when an unexpected celebration is in order. Florists Transworld Delivery Service (FTD) has been in the flower delivery business for more than 100 years and offers delivery to all 50 states and more than 150 countries. This time, I placed one order to be delivered to myself and one to a coworker in Seattle. According to the website, 114 bouquets are usually available in my area with enough lead time, but with same-day delivery, my options were limited to about 37 (though this still represented a wide range of styles and prices). The available arrangements primarily include flowers like roses, lilies, carnations, and sunflowers, in bright colors like yellow, red, and pink. Usually packed into boxes or displayed in a classic ball arrangement, these flowers are incredibly popular with influencers and celebrities.

Since they're so popular, we tested three different preserved rose brands and found the quality of the roses very similar. All arrived in good condition with lifelike blooms, a fresh scent, and in attractive arrangements. They don't have quite the same feel as fresh roses; they're papery, leathery, and a bit dry when you touch them, but visually they make a very nice approximation of fresh blooms.

Ultimately, we chose RoseBox as the best preserved roses for its diverse range of color and display options. Our testers noted that many preserved rose brands prominently display their name or logo on the box or vase they're presented with, and you can't take the roses out of their packaging and put them in your own vase. Since this is a product you'll likely display for a year or longer, we liked that RoseBox's plentiful display containers had discreet branding or none at all.

Almost all of RoseBox's 90+ products can be customized with 21 or more different rose color options. One of our testers opted for turquoise, while others opted from more classic red and pink varieties. We particularly liked the mirrored vase options, though you can also choose from wood, acrylic, pedestal, or more traditional boxes. While we each chose classic box or ball-style arrangements, RoseBox also offers fun designs like its Evil Eye Collection, or the option to build a box with a custom initial.

Full disclosure: preserved roses aren't my personal aesthetic, and compared to fresh flowers, they're very, very expensive, no matter what brand you choose. For example, a single preserved rose will cost you anywhere from $44 to $89, which is the same price as a full-sized bouquet from most of our other top picks. Preserved rose arrangements can run all the way up to $2,000, with a medium-sized array of two dozen roses costing about $300.

That said, if you're someone who loves to keep flowers around, preserved roses can surprisingly end up being an economical alternative to buying flowers every single week. We love how RoseBox presents its preserved arrangements and offers plenty of customization options. We're eager to see if our arrangements live up to their purported longevity.

The best flower delivery service for fresh roses

As the name implies, Roses Only sells just one product but it does it remarkably well, delivering some of the most pristine, stunning, long-stemmed roses we've ever seen.

Price range: $65 to $669

Delivery area: All 50 states and internationally to the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia

Same-day delivery: Yes, in New York City and Los Angeles only

Next-day delivery: Yes

Shipping: $28.50

Pros: Stunning roses; beautiful presentation; long-lasting flowers; available in quantities from six to 100

Cons: Limited product and color choices.

My grandfather was a man of few words and gestures, but every Valentine's Day, he would walk up the street to the florist and buy my grandmother a dozen long-stemmed red roses. In my mind, roses have always had an old-school, classically romantic vibe but I admit that I've rarely been wowed by a bouquet of roses — until I received a dozen long-stemmed red roses from Roses Only.

Roses Only sells — you guessed it — only roses. You can choose between pink or red roses, in quantities of six to 100, with or without added chocolates or a stuffed bear, but that's the extent of the options.

I chose a dozen red roses for myself and had another dozen sent to a colleague in California. Both shipments arrived the next day as promised. While I knew to expect long-stemmed roses, I was a bit surprised by the length of the box, which measured over three feet tall. Inside the shipping container was another long box; this one a simple, yet elegant brown gift box wrapped in a pale green ribbon with a note attached. As someone who believes part of a great gift is in the packaging, I felt this wrapped gift box added a lot of excitement to receiving the roses.

Inside the gift box were 12 of the most unbelievably pristine roses I've ever seen — I mean so cartoonishly perfect that they almost looked fake. Each petal was completely unblemished, velvety on one side and silky on the other; the sort of roses that would be cast for a reality dating show. Every flower was followed by a two-foot stem, and each stem was individually packaged in its own water reservoir for shipping, ensuring that all flowers arrived in excellent condition. The long stems give plenty of versatility for different vase types and can be cut as short as you like. I kept them long and used a tall vase, so that I could gradually trim the stems over time and make the roses last longer. The only downside is that the roses still have all their thorns, so you have to be careful handling them. However, dethorning roses significantly reduce their life, so thorny stems are a small price to pay for long-lasting roses.

Over the next week or so, the roses opened up until they were about the size of my palm. A few of the outer petals on some of the roses dried or wilted, but I simply plucked off the offending petals and my roses were back to perfect. Other than trimming the stems and refreshing the water every few days, they require no upkeep and they're still going strong 10 days after delivery. I expect that at the rate they're going, they'll last me at least three weeks in great condition.

At about $8 per flower, Roses Only sells some of the most expensive roses out there, especially considering you can buy roses from almost every flower delivery service, florist, or grocery store flower counter. Roses are such a big seller that I made sure every arrangement I received as part of this guide included at least some roses. Having seen the spectrum of what's out there, I can confidently say that Roses Only makes the most pristine, long-lasting roses I've found. Dried bouquets have become increasingly popular as a solution for those who love the look of florals but hate the upkeep. Many services we tried, such as UrbanStems and Farmgirl Flowers offer dried and preserved bouquets, but some of the most creative and beautiful preserved arrangements we've seen have come from East Olivia.

Founded in 2017 by Kelsea Olivia, East Olivia started out as a creative studio doing floral event designs for major companies like Netflix, Spotify, Google, Teen Vogue, Anthropologie, and others. As an event design company, East Olivia's floral designs made playful use of color, shape, and a mix of dried and fresh florals to create imaginative, other-worldly installations. Due to the pandemic, the company pivoted and began offering "forever floral" dried arrangements, allowing anyone to own their own small East Olivia installation.

The offerings change seasonally, and right now both the winter collection and Valentine's Day collection are available. Most of the options feature ornamental grasses and filler flowers, many of which have been dyed dreamy pastel colors. I have The Rose from the winter collection and The Harper from the Valentine's Day collection. Each arrangement comes fully arranged and delicately packaged with its own matching vase. Both of my arrangements arrived safely, with no crumbling or breaking. The Rose features miscanthus, pampas grass, ruscus, helecho fern, and bunny tails in varying shades of pink, set in an ivory porcelain vase. It currently lives in my office, where it makes me smile every time I walk past it. I love knowing that I'll get many, many months of enjoyment out of it.

The Harper has more of an '80s throwback vibe with white palm fan, miscanthus, pampas grass, and gypsophila, accented by uniquely preserved red roses. Unlike most preserved roses, which are kept in boxes, East Olivia found a way to present them in arrangements — a first, as far as I've seen. The arrangement comes in a pretty pink ceramic vase; just enough detail to say "Valentine's Day" without screaming it.

The fact that East Olivia's collections change with the season makes each arrangement feel special and limited edition. I'm always excited to see what's coming next from this inventive company, and its creative dried arrangements make a unique and thoughtful gift that your recipient can enjoy for months or even years.

Order processing can take up to five business days, so this isn't a last-minute gift. You'll want to plan ahead if you plan on gifting one of these dried arrangements, especially considering the limited edition collections can sell out quickly.

What else we tested

We tested 12 brands for our guide to the best flower delivery services. The bouquets we received from Ode à la Rose were breathtaking, and this service is a fantastic option if you live in New York City, Philadelphia, or Chicago where you can choose from a wider selection of arrangements and have the option of same-day delivery. However, the selection is limited, especially for nationwide delivery (only 10 bouquets were available for delivery to Boston). Our Gemma and Felice bouquets were gorgeous, though, and we're looking forward to seeing this service expand its offerings.

The Bouqs Co. (starting at $39): Many of our reporters and editors have ordered bouquets from the Bouqs, and we've been impressed with this brand in the past. However, compared to other services we tried, bouquets from the Bouqs were notably smaller and less full. My grand Santa Cruz'n arrangement was supposed to have 120 blooms, but actually came with about half that and several stems were wilted. A small note on the product page says "please note that spray roses feature multiple smaller blooms per stem," but I still only counted around 60 in my arrangement. The packaging also wasn't very protective; my flowers were zip-tied directly to the shipping box with only a single sheet of paper laid over them for protection. Our California tester had a similar experience; her bouquet arrived small and wilted, though it perked up a bit in water. While we hoped that our experience was an outlier, other review sites have also noted a dip in the quality of Bouqs bouquets in the years since the service launched. We've always loved the diverse selection of creative bouquets from The Bouqs, so we hope it fixes these issues soon.

Rosepops (starting at $32): This preserved rose brand sends its arrangements packed in lidded boxes. When it arrives, you remove the lid and pull on the box strings to "pop" the roses up above the lid of the box for presentation. The popping mechanism was unique (and nice for storage), and the roses felt softer and more natural than other preserved roses we've tried. However, our testers thought the large and prominent logos on all the containers cheapened the presentation, and the website isn't intuitive to navigate.

1-800-Flowers (starting at $39.99): Before the internet, calling 1-800-Flowers was the primary way to send bouquets to someone if you didn't know a good local florist. The retailer still offers hundreds of bouquets and gifts, now through its website, many of which are available for same-day delivery via local florists. While the selection is robust (I counted 53 bouquets available for same-day delivery in my area), the website is a bit tricky to navigate. Even when I specifically browsed for flower bouquets, the results were integrated with gift baskets, edible arrangements, and teddy bears, and there was no way to filter out the categories I wasn't interested in. It made finding what I wanted more tedious. The bouquet I received was skimpier and less impressive than others from similar services and only lasted a week. Our California tester noted that the orchid she ordered wasn't packed very well for shipping, and a lot of the gravel and soil in the container was spilled when it arrived.

Venus Et Fleur (starting at $44): This preserved rose brand delivered fresh-smelling, attractive roses. We ordered two to three arrangements from each brand, evaluating the selection, ordering, and delivery process. We sent bouquets to testers in different parts of the country — including New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, rural Colorado, and suburban Connecticut — to see if quality and delivery time varied based on location. In all, we tested 27 bouquets from 12 brands. Here's what we looked for in the best flower delivery service:

Ordering: We scrutinized the ordering process of each service, noting whether the website was simple to navigate, what the product selection was like, and how easy it was to place an order. We also looked at shipping options and estimated delivery times.

Delivery: We noted whether the arrangements arrived when they said they would (all did), evaluated packaging, and looked at the condition of the flowers when they first arrived. Testers across the country compared notes; we found delivery times and quality consistent across the country.

Quality of flowers: We looked for full bouquets of lively-looking flowers that matched the description and photo of the arrangement we ordered online. We read all care instructions and followed them meticulously, noting how long the flowers remained fresh enough to display.

Consistency: A good flower service should deliver quality blooms no matter the location of your recipient. Our testers across the country took photos and detailed notes about delivery and bouquet quality to compare experiences.

What we look forward to testing

We continue to test flower delivery services in pursuit of the best place to buy bouquets.
