Has the country reached a tipping point' The killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and John Crawford III, among others, by police officers focused national attention on race, police violence and the apparent unwillingness of grand juries to indict those who carry a badge.The growing list of people, often African-American men, killed by police lead to the widespread realization that officers are rarely prosecuted. And finding an accurate count of all the victims is nearly impossible because of flawed record-keeping. What is clear is that race is at the heart of the issue. Black men are 21-times more likely to be killed by police than are white men, according to research by ProPublica. The year ends with demonstrators taking to the streets across the country in displays of civil unrest not seen since the height of the Occupy movement in 2011. What follows are some of the most well-known and controversial instances from 2014 of officers using deadly force.
