Sango-Ota residents laud police for curtailing NURTW crisis

Published by Tribune on Wed, 23 Nov 2011

Men of OgunState PoliceCommand have been commended for their prompt response to ending violence in Sango Ota, recently.Members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) had recently embarked on violent clash to overthrow the leadership of Sango Ota branch of the union. The action was resisted and a violent clash broke out between the two factions. Four persons were reportedly killed in the mayhem and scores of others sustained injuries.Community News, however, learnt that men of the Ogun State Police Command quickly moved in and prevented the violence from escalating.Speaking on the actions of the police, a resident and businssman in Sango, Alhaji Adebayo Ajani, told Community News that the police were pro-active in the action and that really helped to prevent the clash from spreading to other areas of the town.According to him, 'we were very happy with the steps taken by the police, it really helped in preventing the clash from spreading beyond control. Again, some people were arrested and that really helped in sending signals to other trouble makers that the police meant business.'In her own reaction, Mrs Alirat Asake, a food vendor in the area, told Community News that the last week Tuesday clash among NURTW members caught her unawares as her food meant for sales were wasted by the warnings factions. 'I didn't know that there was going to be an unrest in Sango because we had not witnessed such an incident in a very long time. I was caught unawares and the food prepared for sales on that day was wasted. Not only that, I did not go out the following day, thinking that the riot would continue, but the quick intervention of the police stopped the mayhem from spreading for days. The police are now manning the area and the rioters have all gone under.'In his reaction, Alhaji Lanre Oyafemi, a landlord in the area, advised the police to mop up arms and ammunition in wrong hands to prevent people from taking the laws into their own hands. 'You see, these people take to violent clash because of the potency of arms and ammunition in their possession, police should step up actions in retrieving these arms.
