Lagos PDP flays Fashola over toll on roads

Published by Guardian on Fri, 25 Nov 2011

LAGOS State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decried the recent announcement by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to toll Lagos State roads. In a statement yesterday, Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Taofik Gani, said the governor's decision was a confirmation that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) 'is a party with no credibility at all'.He added: 'Why did Governor Fashola wait till after all the elections before unleashing this agony and pains on Lagosians' The governor has put the selfish interest of his business friends and cronies above that of 15 million Lagos residents. The governor has already admitted to paying about N4.4 billion yearly to the gate operators'.Gani also berated Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji and the other 39 members of the Assembly, for complacency and compromise, thereby making it easy for the governor to take Lagos State residents for granted in policy statements. The statement urged 'genuine comrades' in the Assembly to rise and save the state from possible anarchy. It also advised Fashola to immediately retract the order to toll Lagos roads, particularly in the areas where there are no alternative routes.Lagos State residents cannot bear the brunt as they currently stand to pay the highest taxes in the 36 states of the federation, he said.Gani stressed that a transporter, who pays the fees will eventually transfer the burden to poor commuters who happen to be the masses. He also tackled Fasholaon the current Tenancy Law, which compels landlords and tenants to do 'financial sacrifices', which even the government cannot afford.'We wonder the governor's morality when he has not provided affordable housing, introduced legal 'Land Use Charge'.'This is indeed a surprise attack on Lagos residents especially coming just after the recently conducted local council elections', Gani said.
