Hoodlums take over ACN campaign in Yaba

Published by Tribune on Wed, 30 Mar 2011

The campaign venue of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Yaba became a no- go area for residents and commuters on Tuesday as hoodlums popularly known as area boys took over and robbed people of their belongings. The  hoodlums  attacked passersby and commercial motorcyclists who plied the popular Murtala Mohammed Road as party members ran helter-skelter for protection. The Nigerian Tribune gathered that no fewer than three persons were seriously injured while many  lost their money, cell phones and jewelleries to the miscreants. It was also  learnt that some Lagos State House correspondents in  Governor Babatunde Fasholas convoy could not gain access to the venue  as they were waylaid  by the mob.Earlier in the day, Governor Fashola had addressed thousands of Lagos residents to mark his 1,400 days in office at Onikan Stadium where he urged them to be vigilant as the country prepared for another general election in April. He said, we must be vigilant to ensure that our state does not fall into the hands of political jobbers who have no record of accomplishment and seek to experiment with our common patrimony. He explained that the  safest weapon to protect and preserve the  common goals and the ongoing developmental projects in the state was the votes of the electorate. Our votes remain the safest weapons to protect and preserve our common goals from the forces of poverty merchants who purvey destruction at every station they have been, he said.Fashola used the occasion to itemise some of the projects his administration had embarked on and those it had already completed in the last 100 days, which included skill acquisition centre, facility for the physically challenged, medical missions and road construction. He called on the residents to keep on supporting the government, describing them as the pillars of success for the state. You have lived together peacefully, respecting each others diversity and this has made it possible for the government to deploy the inherent advantages of the diversity to propel the state towards prosperity, he noted.
