UNILAG to graduate 8159, gets approval for six new degree programmes

A TOTAL of 8, 159 graduating students will receive their Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates at the University of Lagos' convication ceremony slated for January 18 and 19, according to the institution's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe.Speaking at a briefing in Lagos last Tuesday, Sofoluwe noted that out of this number, 4, 375 students would receive first degrees, while 4,375 will receive Postgraduate Degrees. Of the first degree graduating students 122 passed in First Class Division, with the Faculty of Engineering topping the list.The vice chancellor stated: 'In my book 'Sustaining Unilag as a University of First Choice', I promised to make the University of Lagos an E-University, as one of the building block towards making the University one of the global best. In this regard, this administration is employing electronics systems design and system implementation in establishing an electronics driven university.He continued: 'Consequent upon the global challenges of terrorism, the University of Lagos will blaze the trail by introducing a bachelor's degree in Terrorism Studies which will meet the counter terrorism challenges and risk of involving anti-terrorism technics and counter terrorist threat.On the teaching and learning environment, Sofoluwe noted: 'In our efforts to encourage scholarship as well as to produce outstanding graduates who can meet the challenges of our immediate environment, the University went the extra mile to secure scholarships/Aids, and facilities geared towards providing and sustaining conducive teaching and learning environments for our students. In this regard, on Friday, March 25, 2011 the University presented the Endowment Scholarship Awards to a total 495 students in the Multipurpose Hall of the University.'Also on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, LG Electronics Nigeria Limited awarded scholarships worth 15,000 US Dollars to 10 outstanding students of University of Lagos. Each of the awardees, who will receive the sum of $1, 500 is either a 400 or 500 level student of the Faculty of Engineering, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average ranging from 4.0-4.9. The students received the awards during the Launching Ceremony of the LG Scholarship Scheme on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in the LG Design Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Main Campus, Akoka. Ten recipients, who were carefully selected based on their academic performance and character would also enjoy placement for industrial training during their programmes and employment in the company at the completion of their academic programmes.'Chellerams Industry Plc, has entered into a partnership agreement with the University of Lagos to establish Entrepreneurship Skills Acquisition Centre. The partnership will also include the institution of a Professorial Chair in the Management Sciences and Annual Scholarship Awards to cover tuition, accommodation, books and stipend for two undergraduate students. The Lagos State |Chapter of the University of Lagos Alumni Association facilitated the partnership.On new progeammes, the Vice Chancellor revealed that the institution has received the green light to begin six new programmes at the undergraduate level. They include: Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Geology, Fisheries, Geo-Physics and Early Childhood Education.
