Ondo to support 1,000 indigent women

Published by Tribune on Tue, 21 Feb 2012

No fewer that 1,000 women from the grass roots would benefit from the empowerment programme of the Ondo State government which is aimed at reducing poverty among the people.Indigent women from the 203 wards in the 18 local government areas of the state will be selected to benefit from the scheme. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in the state, Mrs Yinka Alabi, and the Chief Executive Officer of Macadof Konsolt, Festus Alade, made the disclosure at the inauguration of the project. The commissioner said the programme, to be handled by her ministry, would complement other windows of opportunity already opened by some state bodies like the Wealth Creation Agency (WECA), to empower the womenfolk. She said the programme to be implemented in phases would be executed in partnership with Macadof Konsult, a consultancy outfit that specialises in vocational training. According to her, the beneficiaries would be trained in 12 vocations that would make them to be self reliant and also reduce poverty among them. The commissioner said the programme being backed by the governor's wife, Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, would also include provision of assistance in cash and kind to beneficiaries after the training.Twelve skills that include soap and candle making, tie and dye, juice making, nylon production and other sundry vocations that require little initial capital but with high financial yields, are slated to be taught at the three-day workshop. Alade, however, said the programme would also entail the disbursement of initial starting capital with no interest and no paying back.He added that efforts would be made to increase the number of the benficiaries to ensure that the programme achieve the first goal of the MDG, which is eradication of poverty. The wife of the governor, who declared the programme open, said government had resolved to reduce poverty among the women to the barest minimum. She, however, urged the participants and the womenfolk in the state to continue to support the Mimiko administration in order to further benefit from the innovation of the administration.
