Taraba lawmakers feud over PDP's 'declining' fortunes

Published by Guardian on Tue, 21 Feb 2012

INTRA-party wrangling among National Assembly members from Taraba State and the Executive arm of government over the alleged failing fortunes of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to end. While some of the lawmakers have backed Governor Danbaba Suntai on the row, others have appealed to the PDP national leadership to call the governor to order and save the party from collapse.Already, there are worries in the state that the feud is denying the people of Federal Government's projects, which a team spirit among the elected officials could have attracted to the state. The lawmakers, who are involved in the dispute, are the three Senators and five members of the House of Representatives from the state. Two of the Senators recently took Suntai to the cleaners, while all the members of the Lower House and Senator Emmanuel Bwacha from Taraba South Senatorial District, described the actions of the two Senators as 'mischievous.'In a petition, which they sent to the PDP leaders, Bwacha, the Chief Whip of the Lower House, Isyaka Bawa, A.T. Sam-Tsokwa, Haruna Manu, Jerry Manwe and Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, said Senators Aisha Hassan and Abubakar Umar Tutare were pursuing their selfish interests. The six lawmakers, who signed the petition, urged the PDP leaders, including President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President David Mark, the party's acting Chairman to disregard the allegations levelled against the governor by Alhassan and Tutare. The petition, which was made available to The Guardian in Jalingo, read: 'We therefore wish to call on your Excellency, the acting PDP national chairman, to discountenance the petition and treat it as the most unreasonable postulations of schemers.'Hassan from Taraba North Senatorial District and Tutare from Taraba Central Senatorial Zone, had accused the governor of anti-party activities as well as trying to compel members of the party to join some opposition parties.Describing the governor as a 'dictator,' both Senators said for the PDP to redeem its battered image and saved from the looming collapse, the 'ill activities of the governor towards the party must be checked.
