Published by Tribune on Thu, 23 Feb 2012

THE national headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has dissolved the caretaker committee put in place in Lagos State and announced a new management committee. In a press statement issued in Abuja, on Wednesday, signed by the president, Alhaji Najeem Yasin, the NURTW said 'the rationale behind the initial extension of the tenure of the caretaker committee by one month was to give room for the smooth conduct of state delegates (elections) scheduled to hold at the expiration of the one month extension.'It added that 'unfortunately, reports from the print and electronic media during the past few weeks indicated that rival factions continue to engage in sustained gun battle that resulted in the killing of a number of persons, in addition to destruction of properties worth millions of naira.'The statement noted that since it was impossible to conduct elections under the prevailing circumstance, it decided to set up a-13 man management committee to oversee the affair of the state council, 'until when the atmosphere becomes conducive.'The statement gave the name of the acting chairman of the committee as Alhaji Tajudeen Badru Agbede, while Mr Sunday Yusuf was named as his deputy.Messrs Michael Odugule and Ade Ashorona were named as vice chairmen, while Mr Olusope Bodude emerged as the treasurer.
