Russia just dumped 3 US wines

Published by Business Insider on Mon, 17 Aug 2015

Russia's Rospotrebnadzor, the federal service forsurveillanceof consumer rights protection and human wellbeing, banned three types of wines from the US, according to the Moscow Times. The wines in question are the Gnarly Head Chardonnay, produced by Delicato Family Vienyards, the Geyser Peak Merlot, produced by Geyser Peak Winery, and the Crane Lake Moscato, produced by Crane Lake Cellars.Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement that itconducted an investigation that found highlevels ofphthalatesin the Chardonnay, and high levels ofphthalates and bifenazate pesticide inthe Merlot and Moscato.Phthalates are the first class of danger according to the sanitary and toxicological indicators, and can cause functional and other organic changesin the central and peripheral nervous system,as well asoncological illnesses, and fertility problems in both men and women, Rospotrebnadzor saidin thestatement.Rospotrebnadzor has imposed bans over foods from western countries over the last few months. Most recently, they banned a brand of canned sprats from Poland last week."Some observers see as a politically motivated move targeted at imports from countries that slapped sanctions on Russia over its support for separatists in Ukraine," according to the Moscow Times.Still, this isn't the first time thatRospotrebnadzor an alcohol from the States. Last year, in August 2014, the service reportedlyfound phtalates in 1792 Ridgemont Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, produced by the Barton 1792 Distillery, according to the Moscow Times.SEE ALSO:The Russian ruble just plunged to a 6-month lowJoin the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: 9 non-chemical ways to fall asleep super fast
