Daniel sues Ogun, ex-aides for libel, seizure of property

FORMER governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, has fileda suit against two of his former political associates over alleged publication of libelous stories against him. He also filed a suit against the state government over alleged illegal take-over of his property.In one of the two separate suits filed before the Ogun State High Court sitting in Sagamu through his counsel, Gbenga Ojekunle, Daniel is asking the former chairman of Ijebu-East Local Council, Tunde Oladunjoye and his (Daniel's) erstwhile Chief Press Secretary, Wale Adedayo, to pay N500 million each as compensation for the alleged libelous publications.Specifically, the claimant, in the action against Oladunjoye, contended that the strained relationship prompted by the defendant's defection to the opposition party, has resorted to publication of offensive and injurious articles against him, especially through on-line network publications, which were calculated to damage his reputation and lower his estimation in the eyes of right-thinking members of the public.The defendant resorted to massive media onslaught against the claimant by publishing false, malicious and unsubstantiated stories against the claimant with the malicious intent of doing incalculable damage to the claimant's reputation.Daniel anchored his suit against Adedayo on the alleged defamation of his character in his book, titled: Micro Seconds Away from Death, published in 2010 where the claimant alleged that he was portrayed by Adedayo as a murderer, who is not worthy to be associated with by decent human beings. He joined the publisher of the book as co-defendant in the suit.The claimant is also seeking an order of the court to perpetually restrain the defendant from publishing an alleged intended book, titled: In the Line of Fire: Party Organisation in a Young Democracy.In the suit against the state government and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the claimant is seeking:' a declaration that he is legally entitled to the certificate and right of occupancy on a parcel of land situated at the GRA along Oba Erinwole Awolesi Road in Sagamu, Ogun State;' an order declaring the purported cancellation or revocation of his certificate of occupancy on the land as illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional and an abuse of power and;' an order of injunction restraining the state government and its agent from claiming the land through demolition of any part and compulsory acquisition without recourse to law.
