Tanke residents protest irregular power supply

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Mar 2012

In a protest against incessant power outage in Tanke area of Ilorin, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State, students of University of Ilorin living off campus, have taken to the streets. The students, along with indigenous residents of Tanke area, staged the peaceful protest against what they described as insensitivity of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) on the plight of the residents of the area among others who had to contend with poor electricity supply in the face of heat ravaging the community.Speaking during the protest, one of the residents who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the aim of the protest was to express their displeasure over the recent interruption of electricity supply in many parts of the state which he said had subjected everyone to darkness, restless sleep, intense heat, coupled with inadequate water supply. The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: no power supply, no light, why'While reacting, the Public Relations Officer of the PHCN, Challenge Business Unit, Mr. Mohammed AbdulGafar, said that the epileptic power supply was a nation-wide problem and was as a result of Egbin Power Station that had not received supply from the major supplier. He also said that the breakdown of Kainji Dam Power Station was because of the over flooding, adding that, "due to this, 900 mw has been dropped from our total power supply and this has brought about rationalisation of power because of the reduction. So, this is responsible for the problem of electricity supply experienced by the people in the state recently," he said.He also said that the situation would persist until the two power generating stations were put in place by the authorities, "but now we are rationalising to ensure that everybody received," he said.
