NIRA to address challenges of Nigeria's domain names at forum

AS part of efforts to deepen the call for the adoption of Nigeria's domain name'.ng, the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), managers of Nigeria's identity on the Internet has announced move to address challenges beclouding the adoption in the country.According to NiRA, there will be a workshop on the registration and management of .gov.ng domain names on April 4, 2012 at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja. The workshop, according to the Internet registry, is a collaborative effort of NIRA and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).Speaking on the event, the President, Executive Board of Nigeria Internet Registration Association, Mrs. Mary Uduma, noted that the workshop, is the first phase of workshops towards actualising the Federal Government of Nigeria's decision to migrate all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies' domain names to .ng, as well as the directive of the Minister of Communications Technology to transfer the Registration of Federal MDAs domain to Galaxy Backbone Ltd.According to the statement from NiRA, the workshop shall build capacity in the MDAs to manage their respective domain names.While commending the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria's to migrate all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies' domain names to .ng, Uduma averred that the adoption of the .ng is for the benefit of all Nigerians. She opined that the move of the Federal government is a milestone for the .ng, Nigeria's unique identity on the Internet.Uduma emphasised that beyond the issues of national identity and patriotism, which are nonetheless relevant, the government of the day is aware of the consequence of this important national resource, and targets at leveraging the cyber security the country code provides relative to the use of gTLDs for the affairs of state.The president of NiRA opined that a wide adoption of .ng by Nigerians shall constitute a good tool in the effort to project the good people of Nigeria and the nation, noting that 'Our collective adoption of the .ng will be a strong tool in reversing the adverse publicity projected by foreign media.'The war will be won on the local and international frontiers when institutions of government in Nigeria, credible real and legal persons and entities in Nigeria adopt the use of the .ng, not just from a consumerism perspective, but by generating a Nigerian content to the Internet,' she reiterated.'.ng is the two-character country code reserved for, and used by Nigeria in consonance with the unique identities upon which a global Internet is predicated. This is, otherwise, referred to as Nigeria's country code Top Level Domains. A country code Top Level Domain is used or reserved for specific countries, sovereign states or dependent territories in the Domain Name System,' she clarified.
