Kunle' A flow with the mind

Published by Guardian on Mon, 21 May 2012

WHETHER a man is financially made or not, he desires to be seen as confident, trustworthy and professional. Though the outward appearance is not nearly as important as our inner character, men are best served when they dress well. Fortunately, it doesn't cost a fortune to look great. If you pay attention to details, and willing to spend a bit more time putting your wardrobe together, you can create an ambience that makes you look like a million. This is true for the award-winning film producer, director and actor, Kunle Afolayan, over the years, has proved to the Nigerian audience and critics that he is talented. However, many people do not know that the trained economist and ex-banker, who started out as an actor and featured in several Yoruba and English movies before going for a training programme at the famous New York Film Academy, is one of the most stylish men in the movie industry. The ambitious filmmaker stands out in Nollywood for the thoughtful, articulate and intense involvement in high quality films. His eyes for detail and exceptional ability to bring his subject to life on film have earned him respect. He has directed, co-directed and produced award-winning films such as Irapada, Figurine and Phone Swap.Get a few of Kunle's style secrets and how to achieve that perfect look you desire.Flow with the mind, yet outstandingWhen it comes to style, Kunle flows with the mind. He says, 'I don't predetermine my style, I just flow with whatever comes my way. I like to look good; at the same time, I don't go out of my way for label, I go to shop for what I think suits my body' something unique and goes with the outing or whatever I am doing at a particular point in time.'Rock itThough the award-winning movie producer is never particular about the texture when it comes to garments, his favourite pieces of clothing are shirts, linen fabric, and anything he lays his hands on.Go for classy colours'In terms of colours, I like black, blue and white. You will mostly find those three colours in my wardrobe; every other thing, I just free style. I like black because it goes with anything: shirt, pant, suit, jeans and blazers, any day. White is also a colour that can pass anytime, any day and mostly for formal occasion, it can always be a combination of white shirt, tux or something. And if you want to do native, put on white agbada or buba, it will still come out good,' he enthuses.Don't be brand freakKunle is one dude that is not particular about the brand of the outfit or accessory he is buying, rather, he opts for what fits him and he is comfortable in.For belts, he goes for Dolce and Gabana. 'I did all those cufflinks thing when I was working in the bank, and after that, you would hardly see me in such a formal look. I would rather do casual-formal or I just go casual. I have not really been accessories freak like that, except for all those local stuffs I pick when I travel to some of these African countries. They are things that are permanent with me and I intend to even increase them, have more. And for wristwatches, I like Storm, Bentley and a few others.' AccessoriesWhen it comes to accessories, Kunle loves his wristband and cannot do without his local bracelet. He reveals, 'they are something I can't do without. I'm so used to them that when I'm not putting on any, I feel very empty.'Shoes affectionAs much as they are a girl's favourite, you can't live without them. Kunle is one of the few men that invest in shoes. He says, 'whenever I travel, one thing I try to do is to pick a pair of shoe; I have over 100 pairs. I am really into shoes, but not an accessories person.'Your scent'I am not a fan of scent or perfumes. I wear them, but I don't use my money to buy any one. When my wife or someone else gives them to me, I use, but I am not very particular about what scent or what smell. I know Blue Jeans, D n G and a whole lot, but I am not into them. This does not mean that I'm not stylish.'Be red carpet comfyKunle has a different approach to red carpet looks. He says, 'maybe because of what we see in entertainment TV, Oscars, music awards and all the foreign events, we so much believe that we are not dressed in certain style. It is not for me. If red carpet is about glamour, you can look as glamorous as you want; you can wear native and wear the native cap and wear buba and sokoto and wear shoes.'For me, it is really about what you feel comfortable in; it doesn't mean you have to wear a gown because everybody is wearing it and you fall when you are going to pick an award. It has to be about comfort and you have to be outstanding.' The colour also matters and style as well. Oyinbo will wear tuxedo; it is always black on white or black on black, or white on white; it depends on how stylish you want to be. I don't think there is restriction to how you look; I think it is about the person and what the person feels good in.'Be your own stylist'I have never work with stylist, but I am looking for one now. I have always been my own stylist, and the reason for my looking for one is because I can't style myself. Most times, I design what I want, or give them my idea of what I want and where I am going to; like what I wore at AMAA, I told him, I want to wear buba and kende with cap,' he enthuses.Be fit'I used to play basketball every Sunday. However, because I have been busy with work, now I take a walk every morning, at least four times in a week, for an hour and half within my area. Sometimes, I do push-up, but because I am really into basketball, that I think works for me. I am trying to lose weight because in my next film, I am going to play a lead role and it requires a particular look; so, I will have to lose like 20kg and get muscular or something.' Your body, your creamHe says, 'I just cream my body. I use anything I see, however, I use Clear Essence normally, and when it finishes, I pick up anything I see.
