Sunday School With Pastor Enoch Adeboye

Published by Guardian on Sun, 10 Jun 2012

Self Discipline (I)Memory Verse: 1 Cor. 9:27 'But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection.'IntroductionNOT all legitimate things are beneficial. Hear Apostle Paul: 'All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.' (1Cor. 6:12). The frequency, manner, motive, place and circumstances of even aseemingly 'harmless' thing can affect its effect.OutlinesFood:Food is not merely legitimate; it is essential for life. The paradox is that we can eat ourselves to death. Obesity is endemic in many countries and is the root cause of several ailments and organ failures in youngsters in the prime of life. Paul went on to declare: 'I will not be brought under the power of anything.' (1Cor. 6:12) Both food and the stomach are doomed for destruction. (1Cor. 6:13)Stomachs can become idols. (Phil. 3:19) The glutton shall end up in poverty. (Pro. 23:2) The bible declares that meat is good for food (1Tim. 4:3) yet too much red meat has been identified as a major health risk. Self discipline and moderation is the key to real enjoyment.Leisure: God rested on the seventh day from all His work. (Gen. 2:2) He commanded us expressly to do likewise. This includes our sons, servants, and even strangers within our gates. It is an all-encompassing and unequivocal commandment.Bodily exercise is not without benefit and pleasure. (1Tim. 4:8) But the one who lives for pleasure and pleasure alone belongs to the realm of the living dead. (1Tim. 5:6) Lovers of pleasure, to the detriment of God, are roundly condemned. (2 Tim. 3:4)ConclusionWe need to wean ourselves from any habit that erodes our relationship with God. Addictions appear innocuous at the beginning but gradually overwhelm ourwillpower and ensnare us. I declare permanent deliverance from every addiction in Jesus' name.
