Traditional Rulers Meet On Insecurity

DISTURBED by insecurity in the country, traditional rulers, under the aegis of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), would meet tomorrow in Osogbo, the Osun State capital to discuss security challenges facing the country and roles traditional rulers can play in mitigating effects, and preventing future intra- and inter-community threats.The event,convened by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Chairman and co-Chairman of NCTRN, respectively, will be hosted byOsun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and will hold June 11-13, 2012, at Leisure Spring Hotel, Osogbo.In a statement, Alfred Chiakor, who is Chief Strategist for Ashcraft Centre for Social Science Research, Consultants to the Council, said the retreat would be an opportunity to deliberate on issues such as maximising the protocols of Alternative Dispute Resolution for reconciliation and integration at the community level.He noted that the event, themed, 'National Interest, Security and Development: The Role of Traditional Rulers in Mitigating non-State Security Threats in Nigeria' is expected to be declared open by President Jonathan.Monarchs expected at the occasion include the Shehu of Borno, Oba of Benin, Etsu Nupe, Emir of Gwandu, Mingi XII of Nembe, Obong of Calabar, Obi of Onitsha, Amanyanabo of Opobo, Gbong Gwom Jos, Emir of Katsina, the Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya and representatives of community-based and non governmental organisations, among others.According to Chiakor, the traditional rulers, as custodians of cultures, will synergise to invest in stabilising a heated polity.
