Published by Tribune on Tue, 12 Jun 2012

Commuters in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were, on Monday, stranded at various bus stops as members of the mini-bus operators withdrew their vehicles from the roads.Consequently, commuters were seen waiting endlessly at the bus stops. Those who were mostly affected were school children, civil servants and traders, who were seen stranded at the bus stops from Orita Challenge to Iyana Church.Nigerian Tribune revealed that from Orita Challenge to Iyana Church, Mokola, Gate, Molete, the mini bus operators were off the road.At Gate, Mokola and Molete, vehicles were seen parked inside petrol stations while others were parked along the road.Nigerian Tribune learnt that the commercial bus operators were protesting the increeased levy by the caretaker committee of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state. It was further learnt that the new management of the union had increased the levy from N50 to N250, which the drivers considered to be too high.It was also gathered that after all efforts to prevail on the committee to reduce the levy failed, the bus drivers decided to withdraw their vehicles from the road. The bus drivers called on the state government to obey court judgments on the NURTW crisis in the state with a view to restoring lasting peace in the union. When contacted, the caretaker committee chairman, Comrade Taofeek Oyerinde, said that the matter was being resolved.
