Lawyer advises surveyors on professional practice

Published by Tribune on Mon, 02 Jul 2012

An appeal has gone to surveyors in the country to guard against unprofessional practice of surveying same plot of land for different or contending parties.A former NBA Chairman in Kwara State, John Baiyeshea (SAN), gave the piece of advice in a lectured titled, 'Surveying, Disaster Management and Global Warming', he delivered at the 47th Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, held in Ilorin Kwara State recently.Baiyeshea also enjoined the surveyors to address issue of high fees and sub-standard jobs which he noted had been parts of complaints against them at some occasions. He urged the surveyors to always consider such issues as climate change, global warming and environmental situations and conditions to give their client the best form of advice on possible environmental impact on their properties. The lawyer, who noted that the surveying profession was in a period of unprecedented change with the traditional measurement instruments and tools not being able to cope with the automated devices, new satellite navigational system and new space missions, said the surveyors in the country needed to develop more skills and acquire more knowledge that would make them to meet up with the modern challenges.'There has to be a deliberate and conscious political commitment and institutional development to sensitise the government on the need for the surveying profession to move to the next level and to develop and use their potential for the benefit of the country.'There is therefore, the need for an increased engagement at the political level by heads of the surveying profession in and out of government to cause there to be a master plan of action to upgrade the practice of surveying to the international standard practice, particularly as it now relates to disaster management and control,' he said. The lawyer advocated a legislation that would enable the country to be preventive and proactive against suffering of natural disaster by the people.
