Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 Jul 2012

The Ogun State government has assured residents of Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state of its readiness to develop the community infastructurally. It also promised its readiness to improve their standard of living by collaborating with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to delineate the border town from the neighboring Republic of Benin and provide it with necessary life-enhancing infrastructural facilities. The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa gave the assurance recently in Abeokuta while hosting the traditional ruler of Tongeji Island, Oba Obabiolorunkosi Okiki and leaders of the community. The SSG disclosed that government in collaboration with the Federal Government was planning to construct a road linking the Island to the state in order to establish its autonomy from the Republic of Benin. He said, 'Tongeji Island is very important to our administration. The road we are planning for is a major investment. We cannot do it alone and that is why we have been collaborating with the Federal Government to build a road that will link the Island and Ogun State.'He commended residents of the area for their support to the Senator Ibikunle Amosun's administration since assumption of office and admonished the traditional ruler to further educate his subjects on plans of government for the development of the area.He also charged him to sensitise his people on the need to participate actively in the forthcoming local government election, urging that they should vote for candidates of their choice. The monarch in his response disclosed that they had resisted entreaty to them by the government of the Republic of Benin and therefore pledged their support for the state government.
