Govt to deliver Enugu-Port-Harcourt road project soon

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Jul 2012

THE Federal Government has said it would complete the ongoing repair work on the Enugu-Port Harcourt express road by August, the Minister of Works, Mr. Michael Onolememen, has disclosed. The minister, an architect, spoke after he was invested and admitted into the College of Fellows of the Nigerian Institute ofArchitects (NIA) at Imo Concorde Hotel, Owerri at the weekend. Also admitted into the league of fellows of the institute were seven other members of the association. In their comments, the recipients of the award said the influx of quacks into the building industry has had negative impact on the psyche of the nation.Onolememen, who was invested along side with the first African woman Rear Admiral and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Navy Post Service Housing Scheme (Itunu Hotonu), Onuagulichi Azike Diribe, Beneth Hycinth Ndudimand Benedenemo, said NIA should work harder to ensure that the institute brings in creditability to it.'The Enugu/Port Harcourt Road, I am aware is under repair. It has been like that for a while. If you drive on that road, you will discover we have in the past few weeks, started emergency repair on that particular road. It is being coordinated by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the repair work is expected to be completed in August.'The minister, who was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Arch. Terver Gemade, the Managing Director of the Federal Road Maintenance agency (FERMA), Gabriel Amuchi and other directors of the ministries, commended the contributions of the NIA, thanking its President, Ibrahim Abdulahi Haruna, members of the executive and the Imo State Chairman of NIA, Frank Ajaero. On quackery, the minister said time had come to ensure right things must be done. 'Time has come for the right thing to be done. You find people invade. People who do not have knowledge of architecture vetting your paper. This is abnormal.'He harped the need for the institute to set up a collaborative network to ensure that there should be distinction between private and Public sector, stressing that the NIA should attend the July 11 conference on infrastructure.Speaking, the President of the NIA, Ibrahim Haruna, said he was pleased to preside over the investiture of the minister and others, adding that those practising and those newly inducted and admitted into the college of Fellows should make good use of the opportunity given to them to climb.
