OVER 60 youngsters from Nigeria and Benin Republic sweated it out at the second edition of the Dodan Warriors Prospect Basketball Camp, which ended yesterday at the sports hall of the Lagos National Stadium. They acquired modern skills in ball handling, shooting and how to play as a team under the guidance of United States-based basketball coaches, Alex Nwora of Erie Community College and Josh Bland of Hoops United. They are also supported by many local coaches in the country.According to the organisers, the camp is designed to give coaches and players the atmosphere to take their game to a higher level. A screening exercise was also held to ensure that true youngsters with prospect were involved in the programme.President of Dodan Warriors Basketball programme, Col. Sam Ahmedu (rtd), said he was not only interested in seeing his team do well in the league but also bent on giving opportunity to youths to achieve their dream, adding: 'What we are doing might be perceived as small but good things begin like this.'The players, he said, would also have the opportunity to acquire life skills and develop sound mind and body, just as he commended Global Sports Advantage, especially its president, Nwora, and Bland, who came into the country despite security concerns.Ahmedu also praised members of Samaritan's Feet, who are using their organisation to provide playing shoes for those who participate in the camp and other less privileged ones in the society. In like manner, he commended Industrial and General Insurance for supporting the club and its numerous programmes over the years.Nwora, who is also the head coach of Cape Verde, said that Nigeria remains the hot bed of basketball talents in Africa because the players are passionate about the game and that opportunities for such kids needed to be utilised to its fullest.President of Samaritan's Feet in Nigeria, Funmi Ohonme, said the idea was to reach out to sportsmen and the less privileged by providing them with shoes, adding that her brother, Manny, who is the head of the U.S.-based organisation, would continue to support the Prospect Camp, which is touching many lives.
