Sovereign Trust goes top, ends NEM's title defence

Published by Guardian on Thu, 12 Jul 2012

SOVEREIGN Trust Insurance (STI) reclaimed pole position as the 2012 Nigeria Insurance Games (NIG) approaches the final matches this weekend after Match Day 4 proceedings last weekend at the University of Lagos Sports Complex.STI displaced NEM Insurance and Union Assurance at the top with a stunning 3-0 defeat of Cornerstone Insurance in the first game of the day, which also recorded the fastest goal of the tournament.Azubuike Nmeze claimed the honours for the fastest goal when he put STI ahead with just 26 seconds of play. Other goals of the encounter came off the head of defender Babalola Adeniyi and Chimezie MartinsCup holder, NEM Insurance, needed a win to seal a successful title defence but saw its dreams blown away by a floodgate of goals opened by Yinka Adedoyin's well measured free-kick, which found the net in the early period of the game. The bad day for the title aspirants continued on 20th minute when Leadway's captain, Joel Akamagwuna, slammed home a rebound off a Samson Sunday shot that cannoned off the upright. NEM's misery was completed by Wahab Quadri's header to end the encounter at 3-0.Sovereign Trust now leads the log on seven points, followed by Union Assurance and NEM on five points each. NEM has, however, completed its maximum number of matches in the tournament, leaving the title chances for STI and Union Assurance. A defeat for STI and win for Union Assurance will see the 2010 champion reclaim the title.
