Ekiti: Reasons Fayose will win

Published by Tribune on Wed, 04 Jun 2014

It was like a huge joke when, in October 2003 Mr Ayodele Fayose, a 43- year-old son of a pastor, emerged the second civilian governor of Ekiti State and made a vow that he would turn-around the whole state, especially Ado Ekiti, the state capital, as a mega city and one of the best in the country. Not many people took him serious; majority of the people were pessimistic about his genuine mission and intention. They thought he may end up following the foot-steps of his predecessor in office. However, Fayose proved his critics wrong as he remained focused, guided and guarded with basic philosophy of industry and the need to make life abundant for the people of the state, he practically demonstrated his determination to turn things around for the relatively young state when, barely 100 days in office, he executed and inaugurated a number of projects. Since then,Fayose has remained an enigma in the minds of thousands of the people of the state otherwise known as 'Fountain of Knowledge,Land of Honour'.He worked tirelessly by ensuring he personal supervised most of the projects. He would visit all the project sites as early as 6 a.m. and sometimes work late till the dead of the night, so as to have first-hand information about the level of the work done in the various sites. The steel resolve of Fayose which saw him staying in office till about 10 p.m., working, consulting and proffering solutions on how to move the state forward, yielded a lot of fruits for the state.Fayose's landmarks in the area of road construction and social infrastructure remained legendary and unequalled. He embarked on massive revolution in road projects to the extent that virtually all the towns and villages in the state were opened up and turned to huge construction sites. That was between 2003 and 2006 when he was the governor of the state. Some of the road projects included the dualisation of14.7kilometre Ado-Ekiti major carriageways. He capped it by linking the dual carriageway to Ikere Ekiti. The reconstruction and asphalt overlaying of the 17.5kilometreAramoko-Erinjiyan-Ikogosi Road and the rehabilitation of the 29 kilometreIkere-Ogbese-Ise-EmureRoad.Others included the construction and asphalting of the 120kilometreIkere-IgbaraOdo Road; the completion of Ijan-Igbemo Ire-Ilupeju Road; the rehabilitation of 23 kilometreIkole-IjesaIsu-Iluomoba Road, and the construction and asphalting of 14.6 kilometreAwo-Eyio-Esure-Ifaki Road; the rehabilitation of 11kilometreIgogo-Otun Ekiti Road to mention but a few.In the area of housing and social infrastructure, the administration of Fayoseput this all-important sector on the front burner. His administration embarked on some legacy projects inherited by the current administration of Governor KayodeFayemi. Some of the projects in this sector included theconstruction of an international standard Trade Fair Complex and ultra-modern hall, completion of the new Governor's Office, the first of its kind in the whole country. The Fayoseadministration equally constructed two modern presidentiallodges and chalets within the Government House; the construction of a banquet hall and chapel inside the Government House; the construction of Fountain Motel Complex; construction of 100 units of 2-bedroom flats each along the Housing Estate,Ikere Ekiti. The same housing estate project was replicated at AfaoRoad,vAdo Ekiti and also the rehabilitation of Ajilosun slum into an ultra-modern shopping complex, where no fewer than 400 lock -up shops were constructed. It is on record that the Afao Ekiti-born businessman-cum-politician recorded these feats without borrowing a dime from any bank or through bond. He was also not involved in any external borrowing. He ensured the prudent management of the state's scare resources at that material time.He made it a point of duty that civil servants and other categories of public servants were paid their salaries as and due, on the 22nd of every month. Before the advent of his administration, teachers' salaries were kept in private accounts but he put paid to that regime of delaying workers' salaries and prioritized same as first line charge, making it difficult for any official to tamper with salaries. No wonder, workers and teachers continued to show their appreciation and love to him, with a vow to compensate him with their votes in the June 21 election.Unlike those who believe in bleeding the state's economy and perpetually running it into recession through the gargantuan debts owed commercial institutions and the bond raised from the capital market, he husbanded the scare resources so well, achieved massively and turned the fortunes of the state around for good. But now, it is sad that our children unborn in Ekiti may surely inherit some of these mouth-watering needless debts which was, at last count, at N37 billion. To glory in projects inherited from the PDP administration by adding little value to such projects and refusing to commence any work on a new road either for rehabilitation or reconstruction cannot be said to be real governance.Globally in Ekiti State today, much has not been seen in the area of school rehabilitation. What we have seen are semblances of work in schools located in areas that are conspicuous for all to see. Schools in the hinterland and in rural areas have been left out and even the semblances that we see are haphazardly done. Some of the roofs of schools were recently blown off by rainstorm. For the much-trumpeted distribution of laptops to students, only 2012 final year students were privileged to benefit from such programme. Let any parent whose son or daughter does not belong to this group come out and say his or her child has benefited from the project. Others will probably get theirs through the television and radio.Fayose's second coming will put an end to capital flight. Profits from contracts and government businesses will be retained in the economy of the state with a view to improving the economy and creating prosperity for the citizens and residents of the state. Citizens and residents of the state deserve patronage from government and the only qualification for that is competence. Doing this has the multiplier effect of revamping the comatose small and medium scale enterprises in the state. He will not import labourers from outside the state for jobs that can be competently and even better handled by resident s and indigenes of the state.During Fayose's second term, which the people of Ekiti will unanimously and resoundingly give him on June 21 through their votes, road projects will not be an avenue to plunder public purse to feather a godfather's nest. The best choices will be made for the good of the greatest number of people. The people of Ekiti have an opportunity once again to take their destiny in their own on June 21. It will be a time to take stock of the activities of the past and present governments in the state. In view of the unbeatable records of Fayose and the massive supports he has received so far from all the corners of the state, there can be no doubt that he will emerge victorious in the election. No amount of propaganda can stop Fayose's triumphal re-entry into the Government House in Ekiti because, as Shakespeare says, no amount of water in the rough rude sea can wash the balm off an anointed king.Ajayi, a social commentator, writes from Ijere Ekiti.
