INEC needs 20,000 personnel for Adamawa bye election

About 20,000 personnel, including ad-hoc and permanent staff from other INEC offices nationwide, will partake in the October 11 governorship bye election in Adamawa State.The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Kashim Gaidam, made this known on Thursday in Yola shortly after a stakeholders' meeting convened at the conference hall of the commission.He said majority of the personnel that would partake in the exercise would be drawn from the tertiary institutions in the state as well as members of the NYSC.He said the commission had only 300 staff strength which he noted was inadequate for the exercise.He enjoined all stakeholders, especially the media, to educate the public as a precursor to mass participation during the polls.However, he admonished the media to avoid sensational and bias reportage, saying that in the event of any breach of law, the people especially the common men will be at the receiving end.Gaidam noted that the commission had taken drastic measures to curtail conflicts emanating from factions within political parties in the conduct of party primaries.He, however, noted that the distribution of permanent voter card will commence before the conduct of the election as against the previous arrangement where Adamawa State is considered in the third phase of the exercise.
