Guinness harps on responsible drinking

Published by Guardian on Sat, 29 Oct 2011

CONTRARY to the belief that there are some health benefits derivable from alcohol consumption, leading brewing company, Guinness Nigeria Plc, has said that there are more myths in the claims than actual facts. They said while different people react to alcohol differently, it is always better to know that there are several factors that affect the way individuals process alcohol in the body and its effect on them.'While drinking in moderation can be enjoyable part of everyday life, heavy drinking, whether on a single occasion or on a regular basis, can have negative consequences both for the individual and for the society.'Head, Sustainability and Responsibility, Guinness Nigeria, Adrianne Nwagwu, who spoke at an awareness ThinkIQ workshop, noted that some research has found that moderate alcohol consumption may have beneficial health effects in some individuals.'Research has also found that compared to non-drinkers, adults who consume one to two alcoholic beverages a day have appeared to have a lower risk of coronary heart disease.'However, no one should begin drinking or drink more frequently on the basis of such health considerations. What is important is that alcohol is alcohol. There are no safer forms of commercial alcohol, regardless of whether you drink beer, wine or spirits. What matters is how much you drink, not what you drink,' she said.Nwagwu added that heavy drinking on a regular basis may lead to serious health problems including alcohol dependence, sometimes called alcoholism, mood changes, pancreatic problems, liver cirrhosis, certain types of cancer and many other types of physical and emotional health problems.'In extreme cases, heavy drinking can result in alcohol poisoning, coma, brain damage and death. In every case it is important to remember that we are each in control of what and how much we drink. Making responsible choices will ensure that whatever the celebration, it remains enjoyable for all concerned.
