RIM faces lawsuit over BlackBerry collapse

Published by Punch on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

Research in Motion is faced with a lawsuit for collapsed service despite the free application compensation package given to users for the three-day cut off from email, instant messages and web access. However, the compensation offer has not been enough for a United States resident, Eric Mitchell, who filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of all BlackBerry users. The suit alleged that the interruptions to e-mail, Internet and messaging represented a breach of contract, negligence and unjust enrichment. Furthermore, Mitchells lawsuit claimed that customers were paying for a service they did not receive and that BlackBerry did not adequately respond to the problem.Meanwhile, other users complain that weeks after the outages, only three of the promised free applications have materialised. Others report that the applications BlackBerry is offering arent actually as free as they seem, noting that the first applications, launched this week, reportedly contain hidden charges.Further research showed that some of the applications contained hidden charges that appear once one uses the basic functions. However, RIM publicly addressed the problems while they were still on-going and co-CEO, Mike Laziridis, apologised again at a conference held by the company."The worldwide outages we experienced this week were unfortunate," Laziridis had said."We restored full services as quickly as we could. Now, were working on root cause analysis and were focused on making this right for BlackBerry users around the world."The outrage came at a bad time for RIM, which has seen its value dip.
