Robber falls into well in a bid to escape

A suspected armed robber, Godwin Akpan, in Benin, Edo State, on Thursday, met his waterloo, as he fell into a well while trying to escape.The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Mr. Muhammed Hurdi, said this at a news conference in Benin on Thursday.Hurdi, who paraded Akpan (18) along with some other robbery suspects, said the policemen, who were saddled with the task of draining the well, after getting Akpan out, recovered assorted weapons from the bottom of the water. On November 2, Godwin Akpan who had been terrorising Iguosa community fell into a well while trying to escape after robbing some innocent citizens. A distress call was made to the police and on arrival Godwin Akpan was actually met in a well from where he was apprehended and several items recovered from him, the police boss said.Items allegedly recovered from Akpan, who denied being a robber, included one cut to size gun, a live cartridge and three handsets.Akpan however told our correspondent that he was arrested over a quarrel he had with his girlfriend, who said he is no longer going to be my friend again.I went to my former girlfriends place to retrieve the handset I bought for her because she said she was stopping our relationship. I am not a robber, he said.
