Olubadan decries imbalance in revenue allocation

Published by Tribune on Wed, 09 Nov 2011

THE Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, has lamented the imbalance in revenue sharing formular among the three tiers of government.Oba Odulana, who recalled with nostalgia the good intentions of the nation's founding fathers for the general well-being of all ethinc nationalities within the country regretted that the lofty ideals of the yesteryears, as envisaged for the nation by the heroes past, had been grossly eroded by lack of committed and focused leaders. He stressed that the God-given natural resources bestowed on the nation had not been used to better the lot of all Nigerians, hence the restiveness and level of decadence, including high crime rates and official corruption being witnessed in Nigeria. The traditional ruler who was represented by the Otun Olubadan, Chief Omowale Kuye, spoke 51st independence anniversary celebration of Nigeria, organised by Admurt Nig. Ltd, with the theme 'wind of Change,' a dance drama to showcase the nation's cultural diversity among all the three tribes and the need for peace co-existence among all Nigerians, irrespective of the tribe and religious inclination.Expressing serious reservations over the current revenue sharing formular which favours the centre at the expense of the states and local governments, which are more closer to the people, the traditional ruler, said post-independence era, the founding fathers, in their wisdom, agreed that all the resources available in any part of Nigeria belong to Nigeria, with a well-thought out revenue sharing formular which was devoid of any imbalance or unnecessary favouritism. He said 50 per cent of the proceeds of such resources were being given to the region where such was found, stressing that the centre only collects 20 per cent while the remaining 30 per cent were being distributed to other regions for balancing, equity and in the spirit of oneness and togetherness.
