Published by Punch on Thu, 10 Nov 2011

Former Juventus executive Luciano Moggi is planning to appeal his prison sentence for his role in the 2006 Italian match-fixing scandal.Moggi was found guilty by a Naples court on Tuesday of criminal association aimed at committing sports fraud and was sentenced to more than five years behind bars. The scandalthe biggest corruption case in Italys football historyleft the Bianconeri stripped of their 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles and relegated to Serie B.AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina were also penalised, as were Reggina and Arezzo. The prosecutors have won only the first round, according to Moggi. The sentence was written (beforehand), he added on Sky Italia. There will be an appeal and Im definitely not losing courage because Im sure that I didnt do anything.Moggi also took issue with a Juve statement issued after Tuesdays verdict, which sought to distance the Old Lady from his actions. It makes it seem like I acted alone. But that certainly wasnt the case, he exclaimed.Another former Juve executive, Antonio Giraudo, had already received a three-year sentence in a fast-track trial and is waiting for his appeal to be heard.Former referee selectors Paolo Bergamo and Pierluigi Pairetto, former Italian football federation vice-president Innocenzo Mazzini and former referee Massimo De Santis were also given lengthy sentences.
