Abandoned corpse near palace creates tension in Kaduna

Published by Tribune on Thu, 10 Nov 2011

THE discovery of acorpse of a middleaged man (name withheld) at the area of the palace of the Emir of Jema'a, Alhaji Muham-madu Isa Muhammadu, in Kaduna State, on Wednesday, nearly led to bloodshed, as angry youths, who claimed to belong to the same Islamic sect with the deceased, went berserk and threatened not to take it lightly if the perpetrators of the inhuman act are not caught.Trouble started in the early hours of the day, when the irate youths organised themselves in a formidable group and frisked both men and women coming in and going out of the town violently. The protesters insisted that they would not allow the tension to go down unless reason was given for the death of the deceased. The development was aggravated when security men were drafted to the scene of the incident, as the angry youth resisted their presence, saying that there would be no peace unless they withdrew. It was learnt that upon the discovery that the corpse belonged to the Hausa Muslim community, the youth went wild, leading to tension in the town.At the time of filing this report, it was still not clear what led to the death of the deceased, but youths in the area were seen mounting roadblock and setting bonfire on the streets. When contacted by telephone, the state Commissioner of Police, Ballah Magaji Nasarawa, said 'I can't tell you anything now, because we are still investigating the fact of the matter.'The palace of the emir was said to have be heavily guarded by security operatives, to prevent the restive youth from attacking it.Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser to Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa on Religious Affairs (Christian Matters), Reverend Joseph John Hayab, appealed to citizens of the state to remain calm and live in peace with each other.Hayab said peace was pivotal to the development, unity and progress of any society, adding that 'what we have achieved with peace cannot be equated with the loss of our dear state and northern region at large due to violence.
