Return of tollgates in 2012

Published by Nigerian Compass on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

I wish to use the medium of your widely read newspaper to comment on the statement credited to the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolomenen. It was reported that the minister proposed to return the toll gates on the federal highways across the country with a view to generating revenue for the maintenance of the roads.Really, the minister's intention is good but the fact remains that it will make mockery of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government's policies. If the PDP government under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo could consider the toll gates not viable about seven years ago for the fact that only N60 million was generated annually. As a matter of fact, it will be incomprehensible that the same PDP government under President Goodluck Jonathan will now turn round to return the demolished toll gates once again.Recall that at the time the toll gates were demolished, nobody raised an eyebrow because it was a welcome development. Any attempt to return the toll gates will amount to drawing the hand of the clock backwards. What the masses need at this time are policies that will move the nation forward and not backward. The return of toll gates will only lead to hike in transport fares and also enrich the pockets of the toll collectors in addition to the sufferings that will be unleashed on the masses by the proposed fuel subsidy removal when implemented.Mr J SU Anyali1, Eripa street, Agbelekale, Abule-Egba, Lagos. 08038095355
