Christian Women Back Bill Against Same Sex Marriage

Published by Guardian on Sat, 12 Nov 2011

THE Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja chapter has thrown its weight behind the anti-same sex marriage bill in Nigeria.According to WOWICAN's chairperson, Mrs. Philo Uche, 'same sex marriage is against the will of God, that is why we are against it.'Speaking at the maiden awards and fund raising ceremony by the FCT chapter of WOWICAN, Uche said 'members of the association had earlier matched to the National Assembly to declare their stand, which was to say no to same sex marriage in Nigeria.'The bill, which was proposed by a National Assembly Committee in July this year, seeks to criminalise same sex marriage, and suggets that the penalty for engaging in it should be a five-year sentence. Many Nigerian youths have also condemned the act of same sex marriage, saying it is a borrowed culture and does not reflect the good attribute of Nigeria as a nation.'Marriage which is an old institution ordained by God was fashioned for a man and a woman and not for people of same sex, and going against God's will would mean incurring God's wrath on our nation, that is currently being faced by many challenges.'Speaking on the award, Uche said: 'The ceremony wasorganised by the association to recognise kind hearted Nigerians who had made efforts to specially touch the lives of women and children in Nigeria. The idea was to create an opportunity to say thank you to the recipients for their efforts and also to encourage them to continue the good work.'Rev. Olubunmi Badejo, a recipient, 'expressed her gratitude to God and the organisers for finding her worthy to be honoured'.
