Women lack skills to operate big business ' BPW

Published by Punch on Fri, 18 Nov 2011

A group, Business and Professional Women, has said that Nigerian women still operate at the fringe of the economy despite their high entrepreneurial drive and education. It stated that despite their high level of entrepreneurial drive, majority of women entrepreneurs did not have the skills with which they could grow their business and move them to the formal sector. The group expressed its determination to reverse the trend by inculcating in them certain business skills through the Women Empowerment Principles that would advance women in business, the marketplace and the community.Speaking during the inauguration of the WEP in Abuja on Thursday, the BPW Regional Coordinator for Africa, Adenike Adeyanju-Osadolor, explained that the initiative was meant to sharpen the entrepreneurial skills of females and teach them strategies that could advance them in the workplace and the community. She said that the principles would help women to develop smart business skills and strategies they could use in running their businesses, adding that the theme of the programme, "Women in real business: doing business the right way," was carefully chosen to meet the needs of participants.According to her, the WEP is a partnership initiative of the UN women and UN global compact meant to encourage and empower women doing business all over the world.Adeyanju-Osadolor stated that if women were strengthened in the marketplace, the ripple effect would be felt in the communities and also engender gender equality in the society. She said, "Although the Nigerian economy leads in Africa in the ratio of women in business and the professions, their activities and in turn their participation in the economy are still at the informal sector level.
