Kagara abductions: Govt has not contacted us, say parents

Published by The Nation on Sun, 21 Feb 2021

By Justina Asishana, MinnaThe parents of some of the kidnapped students of the Government Science College Kagara, Niger State have alleged government insensitivity to their plight. They claimed the government was yet to reach out to them. The families, who are worried over the state of their children, said it was sad when Governor Abubakar Sani- Bello visited the school after the attack, he did not deem it fit to meet with them. They said they have the right to be briefed by the government about the steps taken and what is being done to rescue their children. They said that all the information they get on their children are from the media as none of the government delegations has met with them.Read Also: Kankara boys and now KagaraAll the Governor has been saying has been on the television, radio and newspapers. No one from the government has met with us, one of the fathers who spoke to The Nation said.He also said the kidnappers have not contacted them also to make any demand. The state government has not addressed us. Nothing has been said, all we are hearing is the assurance on the pages of newspapers, we get to know what is happening on social media, though we have been reaching out to the school to know where we are but the bottom line is that they are still in captivity.Nobody has reached out to us. The people who took them have not demanded any ransom. This experience is very tough for us to bear. I cannot imagine what my child is going through in the hands of those people.Another father whose two children were abducted, Adamu Alaji, wondered if the government does not consider them human enough to meet with.My two sons are with the kidnappers. I do not know how they are coping with these people in the forest. You can imagine how cold it has been these past days, imagine them sleeping in this cold, this is very much for my family to bear.Imagine me having two sons in the kidnappers den and we were expecting the Governor invitation to brief us but we only saw him flew into the place of the abduction in a chopper and flew to Abuja and since then, he has not for once brief us or asked to see us. That is very unfair for a government, Adamu said.A father of one of the staff kidnapped, Khamis Tahir, also confirmed the government was yet to reach out to families of the abducted victims.Effort by The Nation to reach Secretary to the Niger State Government and Chief Press Secretary to the Governor were unsuccessful. Our correspondent, who was in the company of the Governor when he visited the school on Wednesday afternoon after the attack, noted no parent of the abductees was available and the Governor did not meet with them. The Governor, who flew on a helicopter to Kagara, only spoke with the principal when he visited the school.
