Lagos LG poll: SIEC's rigging method, most vile - Bode George

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Nov 2011

FORMER Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has described the recent local government election in Lagos State as most vile in the electoral history of the state.George, who said this in a statement made available to Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, also carpeted the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Bola Tinubu, alleging that the former Lagos State governor was holding the state hostage and treating Lagosians with contempt. In the statement, entitled 'A time for deep reflection by the people of Lagos State,' the PDP chieftain said the Lagos council poll, conducted last month, had revealed what he described as 'the reckless desperation, the sheer treachery and primitive recklessness of the leadership of the ruling party in Lagos State.'There are no pretences anymore about the character of the man who now holds Lagos State hostage. Bola Ahmed Tinu bu, the self-appointed national leader of the ACN, does not believe in the free and fair articulation of the will of the people.'Claiming that the PDP won in most of the local government areas in the election, George alleged that the Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission (LASIEC), led by Justice Abdulfatai Adeyinka, colluded with Tinubu to announce arbitrarily that the ACN won all the chairmanship seats in the state. He said PDP candidates won in Eredo, Ikoyi/Oba-lende, Epe and Badagry, where he said the results of the election were announced by the Lagos SIEC Returning Officer, Mrs Tokunbo Fato-yinbo, in the presence of security agencies.'Justice Adeyinka's rigging method is the most vile and demented crudity. Justice Adeyinka is expected to be a learned man. He is a man who should treasure the sacredness of facts and figures. He is a man who ought to appreciate and defend the sanctity of justice and fairness doctrine.'But he negated all logical prudence; he abandoned justice. He should know that whatever we do today will be accounted for before the Almighty Lord. Certainly no man, no matter how highly placed, can escape the final judgment of heaven,' he said. The PDP chieftain, who said the LASIEC boss betrayed the people of Lagos State, also charged Governor Babatunde Fashola to assert himself and rectify the wrongs, adding that he could not afford to be indifferent to the smouldering fire at his doorstep. He also alluded to the political crises in the Arab world, noting that nobody could be certain of what would be the end result of a rebellion gradually brewing in Lagos and which, he said, was caused by Tinubu.
