Corruption, insecurity, bane of Nigeria's stability

Published by Tribune on Tue, 12 Jun 2012

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar and Osun state governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, have identified corruption and insecurity as the major problems affecting the growth and stability of the country. They made the observation on Monday in Osogbo, Osun State at the fifth general assembly of the Conference of Traditional Rulers, which was attended by over 200 first class traditional rulers across the country .They, therefore, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to concentrate on how to curb terrorism in the country, saying that the current security challenges in the country portend serious dangers to the stability of the nation. They also urged the president to consult traditional rulers, in his efforts to provide lasting peace in the country.According to the Sultan of Sokoto, the timing of the meeting was good because it afforded them the opportunity to discuss the issue of security and corruption in the country. He declared that if the nation could tackle the twin problems of security and corruption, other things would fall in line, adding that a nation cannot develop in the face of corruption and pervading insecurity. On his part, Oba Sijuwade said: 'It is not what the extremists do that is our concern. It is the action that we make individually and collectively that will save the face of humanity.'Aregbesola noted that security was a serious business and the roles of traditional rulers towards ensuring security in the country could not be underestimated.
