Women group call for general election at Ugbege community

Published by Tribune on Tue, 12 Jun 2012

A women group, Agura Ugbege Erun Women Forum has called for a general election into the various positions in Ugbege community executive body, just as they insisted on the adoption of the Engineer Frank Ogbemi-led constitution. The protesting women, in a press briefing in Warri, Delta State, at the weekend, said they were fed up with the 14 years rule of Dr Charles Ikomi wherein the oil rich community had no school, no electricity, no jetty, no potable water and health centre, even as they alleged that Ugbege had almost become too bushy.Dr Ikomi, however, had since handed over power to his deputy to run the affairs of the community to appease the people and set up an elders' council and trustee for the community. But the women expressed disdain for a document that vested too much powers on the President-General to single handedly appoint the elders/trustees and key officials without election and insisted that election must be held. They called on Ogbemi to come and present the draft constitution as amended at a national conference of the Ugbege people.'We are asking him to come and present this constitution to a national conference of Ugbege. We will begin today (last Friday) with a peaceful demonstration and if no response, we will take further steps within the ambit of the law,' the statement which was signed by Grace Asadi, Stella Gbiaye, Alice Omariri, Melise Mayuku and Dupe Mene warned.
