Modem for transmitting election results electronically debuts

Published by Guardian on Thu, 28 Apr 2011

GLOBALTOUCH (W.A) Ltd. has announced the availability of a new satellite modem design to ensure optimal satellite communication services in Nigeria. The device, which can operate with multiple computers, can be used to enhance and co-ordinate INECs election results effectively.According to Globaltouch, which is committed to providing IT, Satellite and data communications solutions products and services, the simplex modern can efficiently buffer election results when taken outdoors in a bid to quickly transmit election back to INEC headquarters.Once the modem s connected to INEC computer via USB port, raw data will be sent INECs server for processing. The use of this device will mean elimination of delayed transmission of results or the hassles associated with it. As such, there will be no need for Nigerians to wait hours on end for the release of election results. In addition, it also believed that the simplex modem is able to deliver reliable information due to its ability to transmit nine byte messages, each repeated three times at approximately seven minutes intervals to ensure the elimination of errors while messages streaming through the satellite network. The ease of use and the possibility of a very wide coverage makes the simplex modem and excellent device for INECs use.It would be recalled that in 2009, during a briefing to members of the senate committee on INEC, Secretary to the Commission, Abdullahi A. Kaugama emphasised, voters in the country will receive election results through electronic means to be provided by INEC at the polling stations. INEC has been collating continually but henceforth, the commission wants results transmitted to all polling stations across the country. This is to give INEC more control on the result collation process and minimise irregularities. For one thing, avoiding a lot paperwork will be a plus for INEC and would have solve the challenge of lack of papers for ballot boxes and election results. Proof of the efficacy of electronically relaying of election results is remarkably substantial in countries such as India, Bangladesh and Mexico. It is widely accepted worldwide that e-transmission of election results are far more sophisticated and very successful.INEC has succeeded in dousing fears of an in orderly electoral performance nationwide. Such positive acknowledgement can be further enhanced with use of simplex modem for transmitting election results electronically.Furthermore, it is to be noted that a departure from the old ways can help Nigeria as a whole to achieve faster growth, especially, with regard to the provision of high quality communication services unhindered by bureaucratic policies. Globaltouch believes strongly in progress for Nigeria through maximum utilisation of ICT products.
