This mysterious Tesla Model S has strange sensors and a giant 'emergency' button (TSLA)

Published by Business Insider on Mon, 21 Mar 2016

Images of a Tesla outfitted with new sensors and with what appears to be an "emergency shutoff" button have emerged.A Reddit user who goes by "DavidHGlover"posted the new images Saturday evening. The first image shows new sensors on top of the car.The second image shows the inside of the vehicle and what appears to be a keypad and a giant button next to the giant touchscreen display. As one Redditor suggests, this could be an emergency shutoff button of some kind, perhaps for self-driving car software. The Reddit postersaid in a comment that there was other equipment inside the vehicle as well.Last week, another Model S was spotted in the San Francisco Bay area with mysterious sensors placed all over its body. While Tesla engineers are always testing new hardware and software on its fleet vehicles,it's unclear whether the company is responsible for the additional sensors on these vehicles or if a third party has integrated the new hardware, perhaps to experiment with self-driving technology. However, we do know that Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot feature is at the top of CEO Elon Musk's priority list.Back in November, Musk said that he was looking to recruit software engineers to focus on Autopilot. And in January, he said that with some additional hardware, Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot will eventually be able to drive across the country autonomously.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: A $35,000 Tesla is coming
