NSC seeks Tribune's support for Awolowo Stadium

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

THE National Sports Commission (NSC) Zone One is planning an official commissioning of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium since it renamed after the sage, just as it plans to erect his statue at the stadium. The commission has, therefore, sought the assistance of the African Newspapers of Nigeria, ANN (PLC) publishers of the Tribune titles in achieving the objectives. The Zonal coordinator of the NSC Zone One, Mr Steve Olarinoye disclosed this when he led a top management team of the commission on a courtesy visit to the Tribune House on Tuesday.According to him, the commission, having realised its objective of having the stadium named after the sage, was now pre-occupied with an official commissioning of the stadium while it has already allocated a befitting spot for the erection of Chief Awolowo's statue. He said the management team of the commission decided to pay the visit in order to solicit the support of Tribune titles in reaching out to the south west governors as well as corporate organisations in the country.Responding, the Managing Director/ Editor in Chief of the ANN, Reverend Sam Adesua extolled the virtues of Olarinoye who he said ensured the stadium was renamed after Papa Awolowo through his doggedness. He urged the commission to get all the south west governors involved in actualising the project.'They are all passionate about Papa Awolowo and I am sure by the time you let then know your plans, they will respond.'Reverend Adesua informed the commission that the chairman of ANN, Mama H.I.D Awolowo always desires the best when it comes to the issue of the sage, urging the commission to therefore, ensure that the statue to be erected befitting enough.
